Just ordered a new base ring for my JB. Got an email asking if I was returning my cage as they cannot guarantee the new ring will fit if I don't. I live in the UK and could do without the extra postage cost and the extra wait.
What is your experience? Have any of you bought base rings without returning the cage? Did you have any problems?

I think that the main concern is where to drill the hole for the lock. You could lay your ring on a flat surface and measure up to the center of the hole and then give them that dimension. Even if its off by 1/16th", you probably wouldn't notice.
And you might want to use 'inch' measurements. We Americans are too cocky to learn metric.

How about getting yourself a vernier caliper for a few quid and measure it that way. Although without sending it back there is always the risk. I ordered 2 rings with mine just in case

I would send it back. Their stuff is 100% custom, so I would not expect the new ring to fit your cage well unless they have the cage on hand.

Re: MM base rings
A couple years ago, I bought a MM QK with two base rings, as I wasn't confident enough with my size measurements to order just the one. Quickly realized that the smaller one (1 3/4") was the better fit, and it wasn't long when I wished I had a smaller ring.
A year later (this time last year), I bought a (well kept) MM WM from another forum member here. It came with a 1 5/8" ring, and was built to have the same gap size as the QK I already had. Turns out, for these devices at least, the rings are fully compatible.

I have two MM devices. They both have the security hole for the plastic lock. The screw holes for the devices are totally interchangeable. The security holes are not. I would try to order just the base ring if you don't have the security hole.

Mine is padlock fitted. Do you reckon that'll be ok?

Re: MM base rings
Kind of my point. The extra hole for the plastic lock requires the base ring and cage to align exactly. When I interchange the base rings and cages using only the screw I have no problem. The only difference between a MM device with a screw or padlock in the threads. You can use a padlock instead of a screw if you want.
With only a single hole and the same gap I don't see why the cage would need to be sent in. Perhaps you can Email William at MM and ask him specifically why, using the reasons given by everyone here. We're not the expert he is. Maybe he's encountered other problems and we've just been lucky.
