A unique way to hide your emergency key in plan site.

I've recently purchased a male and female key keeper. It's a chrome plated key holder that has a key hole over the crotch. It take a key that is meant to hold your key ring. My plan is to go into builder mode and turn this into a mini safe door that will hold me emergency Lori's key.

This is the 3rd one of these I'm purchased. The first was destroyed while attaching the hinge. The second worked as intended. The key holder plate opens like a bathroom mirror with a magnate keeping it shut that reveals the mini safe when opened. The mini safe is a very cheap plastic fire box we got from Walmart that doesn't allow you to change the security code. I had to use the emergency key a few months back when one of the pins that connect to the ring on my old CBxxx to the tube came unglued. So now I know the code and need to replace the safe.

Now that i'm in builder mode I've been looking into ways to make a remote locking/unlocking safe without spending a lot of money on an existing one. Plus its very difficult to find a safe the size I need.

I've built a 4.3"H x 3.15"W x 6.5"D metal box using quarter inch metal sheets that mounts to a stud in my wall. The key holder is glued to the front plate of the safe which is hinged on one side and locked on the other.

The lock is where things get complicated for me. I'm using a sliding bolt style lock that's welded to the inner side of the safe door. The bolt is pushed though a hole in the side wall and into another tube mounted inside the stud. The bolt is moved from the locked/unlocked position by an electromagnet mounted on the opposite side panel next to the hinge. I have a three way manual switch that I'm using to test and everything seems to be working great.

Currently i'm researching how to make or cheaply acquire a switch that can be accessed via WiFi or the web. I'm looking a number of TCP/IP controllers that would allow me to change the switch/relay. The difficult part is finding one that also has a cheap mobile app for both android and iphone that's password protected.

I'm waiting to hear back from two companies that seem to be what I'm looking for but let me know if you know of anything that might help. ;)

What? I like to build stuff when I get board. :ugeek:

If you want to build the electronics yourself try an Arduino. They are inexpensive, easy to program (C++), easy to add ethernet (can be POE). They have an incredible support community too that is very helpful for newbs.

Hmmm . . . we're going the cheap route, and using a one-time use plastic lock to hold the key under the medicine chest mirror in the bathroom, once I tell my wife that I am satisfied the belt can stay on for good.

That will be interesting anytime a neighbour is by and uses our loo as well. Either:

a) they will wonder what it is but be too embarrassed to ask
b) they will wonder what it is and be nosy enough to ask

In the event of b) I am not sure how my wife or I will respond . . . but the question is sure to come up (unlike my equipment in its belt) in such a tiny village as this.

Current time: 18:40 MDT (GMT -7). Current temperature, 103 F / 39 C. Not the most comfortable weather to be wearing a steel cup chastity belt that doubles as a pressure canner.
Currently Wearing: The CB-600S or The Avenger Chastity Belt from Chastity Belts USA, depending on Miss BethK.
My wife Miss BethK holds my key.
