Because the commercial key keepers are usually too big to carry around conveniently. My wife wraps my key in tamper-evident tape, and I can put the key with my normal car keys that I'm always carrying around. The small pipe holders (pictured upthread) can be made small enough to be unobtrusively carried around in a pocket. The plastic cases are a bit large, and when most of us carry keys, wallets, loose change, cell phones, etc., it's ungainly to have something that size in your pocket.

We found a way to keep the key avil for an emerency, but it's not avil without some work. I'm not sure if you remember those "Liquid Plastic kits" we had as kids way back when... ???? I found one of these kits at a garage sale, and in one of the shallow molds I inserted the key , with a key chain outside of the plastic. So instead of some insect sealed on my key ring.... I have my key, should something happen.
NOBODY even pays attention to the key chain, mixed in with my work keys. I am sure I could get the key out with just a blow from anything solid. I think dipping the key in soft rubber coating would do the same and would be barely noticable on a key ring.

I kind of like this idea. You KH could even put a stamp or some kind of ID mark before the plastic sets to make sure that you haven't tampered with the coating.

The key could be secure by folding a small piece of paper. The edges cold be glued shut and the key holder sign the paper. It would only have to be a little bit bigger than the key. This can easily be kept in a wallet. If the paper was ripped open in an emergency, the key holder would know.

I'm going to be keeping my emergency key in my car. We'll also keep one in her car. Each key is in a sealed envelope, and I even melted some wax and put it over the seal, then used an item in the house that I found to use as a stamp. I gave her that item and told her to hide it so I couldn't remake that envelope at a later time. What do you guys think of that method?

I carry a spare key in my wallet. I took a self adhesive mailing label and folded it in half with the key inside. I then cut it down to the size of a business card and had my wife write a note on it and sign it. I wrapped the key in a small piece of plastic from a baggy first so the adhesive wouldn't stick to it. The label adhesive stuck to itself it never coming apart so there is no way to open it without destroying it. So far this has worked fine and has held up to the everyday wear of being in my wallet.

I've always wanted to try putting the key between two pieces of paper and running it through a laminating machine. It could be cut to the size of a business card and then it can be easily kept in my wallet. Before laminating it my keyholder can sign the paper with the date, so you can easily tell if it's been tampered with. I have access to a laminating machine at work but I don't want to end up breaking it and having to explain why I was laminating a key :)
