I’m no smoker pro but I will interject some thoughts. For starters I can testify that anything metal has gone through the roof in recent years. No big secret I know. Second 1/4 inch sounds pretty heavy as for moving it. Is 3/16 acceptable? It’s 25% lighter and more popular to find raw material. Which leads me to my final point. Items like this I prefer to build myself if possible. Or utilize someone I know to assist me. Not sure of your situation but $1700 sounds pretty extreme. Like I said I’m not a smoker guy. Just giving some thoughts on the topic.

I have been pondering the 3/16 vs 1/4 myself. I'd prefer the 1/4 if I can get it reasonable, the extra mass helps with heat retention.It's going to be heavy but 400lbs vs 500lbs isn't going to matter that much. Once it gets to where it needs to be, it's going to pretty much stay there.

$1700 really isn't too extreme, there are some that go for a lot more, especially the big trailer mounted models. But those are mostly for pros that need to haul them around for competitions and catering. I don't need something like that, but I am past 'amateur'.

Last night I found a company I didn't know about before, that seems a little more reasonable. They offer both 3/16 and 1/4 metal, and in some cases 1/2" for the firebox. They make pro-level stuff but also offer some smaller units for people like me. I may be able to come in between $1100 and $1300, including shipping. I just need to call them and find out if their pricing is really what the site says. They're based in S. TX, claim that they do their manufacturing just across the border in Mexico for less expensive labor costs.

If they are for real then I may have my solution. So, probably too far off-topic...but it's still kind of 'hot' because the Mrs. didn't shoot it down at all. She said "You use it to make me food, so..." (She also buys me guns and knives.)

A little background to put this in context...
