#5 Masturbation is almost certainly good for your sex life.

This one seems to run counter to many anecdotal experiences on this board. :)

Yes, interesting isn't it? I think the broad generalization of the #5 title is misleading. In the context of you can find what you like and then have your partner join in, yeah - that would be helpful. Much better than assuming the partner can read your mind. Over all, no, I don't think so either. That's my anecdotal experience and I'm sticking to it!

As a species, we are not very good at BALANCE. We here something is "good" and we immediately do TOO MUCH of it. Then we then hear it's "bad" and we ELIMINATE IT ENTIRELY. But there exists a range in which ALL THINGS are both good, healthy and necessary, and some limit beyond which all things become harmful. (I always think back to this exchange between Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry...)

Hugh: I suppose you're going to tell me that cholesterol isn't bad for you next.

Stephen: What's cholesterol?

Hugh: It's ... well, you know -

Stephen: Yes I know perfectly well what it is, but I don't suppose you'd so much as heard of it until a few years ago. You'd die without the stuff.

Hugh: Yes but too much is bad for you.

Stephen: Well of course too much is bad for you, that's what "too much" means you blithering twat. If you had too much water it would be bad for you, wouldn't it? "Too much" precisely means that quantity which is excessive, that's what it means. Could you ever say "too much water is good for you"? I mean if it's too much it's too much. Too much of anything is too much. Obviously. Jesus.

"Too much of anything is too much." Lol

And on something like sexual gratification (of ANY kind) these ranges and limits will vary greatly from person to person. So some naive but we'll meaning soul reports an "average" and everyone assumes that this must be whats "normal" or the lower limit of what's "good" or the upper limit of what's "bad." And I firmly believe that when someone tells you something is good or bad, it usually in reposnse to someone else telling you the opposite, and BOTH are likely misrepresenting the data.

And before anyone starts to quote me all the ways in which masturbation is "bad," please be aware: I'm not arguing that's it good or bad. Merely making a statement about how we (as a species) tend to approach these things. If cutting out porn or masturbation has helped you? Awesome. And, yes, more people should try it, and see what affect it has on them. And what they observe in themselves is 100% valid. (I don't believe anyone's ever died from a lack of masturbation or porn, after all. Lol)

But the healthly range is probably so variable from person to person and the standard deviation on the average practice so wide as to render any overall average or broad-based recommendations meaningless. (Whether saying it's "good" OR "bad.")

Anyway, sorry if this is OT. Interpretation of data is both a career, a hobby and a passion of mine, so I was just drawn in by those last few comments.

My wife asked me recently about masturbation. I told her that the last time I remember masturbating was when we were apart, I did a couple of sessions where I FaceTimed her. That was ~6 months ago or so.

So, yes, I masturbated but she was certainly "in" on it. And seemed to like it.
