Think the same thing happens to everyone. You might try sliding the cage on first, before you start to erect. Then work with the ring. Another suggestion is to install it in a tub of warm/hot water. Never found the ice thing to work because it caused my scrotum to recede making it impossible to put the base ring on.

Early on I would have to wait a long time and then sneak up on the little bastard. It seems strange but it does seem to have a mind of its own. You may need to just sit ready to go but doing something else like watching TV (not porn, that doesn't help). Don't look at it. Don't think about it. Just notice out of the corner of your eye when it goes flat. Then jump on it like you would a rabbit and get the cage on. You have to be quick or it will expand faster than you can put on the cage.
