I ended up with a device I really liked, except for the hinge, so a few drops of solder and a whole lot of polishing made everything right as rain. (That was after the pinching and bleeding experience—damned if I was going to let a mechanical issue get the better of me.)

Twisted, I’ve had three steel (Chinese-made) devices with base ring hinges. My single word of advice is “DON’T DO IT.” The pinching, bleeding, and subsequent swelling and accompanying irritation is a huge negative. You’ve been given great advice on sizing. Let me add my thoughts on the hub and spoke design at the tip of the cage you linked to. That design makes a mess when peeing (even sitting down). I suggest parallels instead of a star shape for the end.

I wear a mesh brief designed to wick moisture away. These are intended for humid environment, but it keeps things dry especially as my cage tends to collect moisture. It provides modest support, but mainly just prevents swing around while walking.

That book worked for us too. Can’t recommend it enough for an otherwise vanilla couple.
