Treat them as one unit once a lock nut has been used.

Year and a half update.
Never have I regretted this.
Quite the opposite in fact.

Re: Transition to steel urethral tube Log.
Bit of an update.
It's still in, has been every day bar a few since I started wearing it. Never an issue, not a twitch or redness. Nothing to indicate this type of urethral is anything but sage and clean. However.
I recently bought an identical unit and once assembled notice the urethral is not aligned the same way.
My original, the one I wear has the urethral positioned close to the bottom of the cage. Anatomically this is the correct place for it to be. Because your urethral in your penis runs along the bottom of your dick.
The replacements tube is centered so it would run through the exact center of your dick.
This simply will not work when yoi get hard, it would be painful.
I don't know why this change has happened, or if the original coincidentally has a fault that made it work?
But it is important to make sure the urethral tube is roughly where you actual dick urethral is. Along the bottom.
Cant show images because I'm wearing it, but will try to show the difference when this is not the case.

Re: Transition to steel urethral tube Log.
I also switched from a flexible urethral tube to a metal tube.
I also had no problems with either.
It slid in like butter.
I had done a lot of research in advance to determine which size would be best and how to best insert it.
The medical sites are also best suited for this.
It also explains what problems there may be and how to solve them.
If you take the right actions and take the right size.
There should be no complications and the urine should also be drained through the tube.
I also find it much more hygienic to wear a cage with a utethral tube.
It prevents unpleasant odors in your cage.
It also makes urination much easier.
The cage I have now, the steel tube is attached as a whole. In my opinion that is much better
No hassle with screwing in or the cap or nut coming loose.

Re: Transition to steel urethral tube Log.
I have altered the new cage so the urethral is in the correct position.
Basically I put a bloody big screw through the cage pee hole from the inside and used a crow bar.
Originally the urethral landed dead center of the ring which is quite likey where the manufacturer intends it to be, because even though they have a dick. They just haven't bother to look at it.
This photo shows my soon to be replacement cage and where it should be.
Then an actual medical pic showing as we all know, where the urethral is.
And then a diabolical picture of where the manufacturers think it is.
How? I mean when you take a pee you can feel it? You can see it? How have they got this so wrong?

Re: Transition to steel urethral tube Log.
Okay, your story inspired me to try again, I ordered a tube similar to the one you have pic of. Installed it this morning, totally shocked no pain only the feeling of the tube inside me. You were so right the one I had tried last time wasn't correct and it wasn't me, LOL.
I stayed around the house for a couple of hours, I had only intended to do a quick test, then decided to go to work keeping keys to unit, an old reliable A-27 with the tube screwed into it. It's now been over eight hours and still comfortable, have urinated several times only issue some spillage looking for larger bulb for next time I am going to try to wear over night and see what happens.
The tube I got is an 8mm so I'm going to try and find a nine - maybe a ten (easier to find) and try it.
So thanks again for the info so far it is working fine I have even already had times I forgot it was there.

Currently locked in custom BA 34R, also use Ba-20 with triple base ring occasionally switched for BA 25 with double base ring.
Re: Transition to steel urethral tube Log.
Looking at your replacement unit and medical pic seeing how it should be lower in cage, I was switching out units, going back to the BA-34R with glans ring. Checking out if everything was OK. I noticed new urethral tube could be screwed onto BA unit, it only has vertical bars so I hadn't thought about using it with U-tube, I screwed it to the bars lowering it like in your pics. Again being shocked tube went in easily even with glans ring installed, I had worried it might make it too tight.
Once unit assembled it was even more comfortable than the A-27 unit I had started with. WOW
The BA unit is shorter than the A-27 so not only is it positioned better it goes all the way out of cage so between the glans ring, which had already made the BA unit so I could not pull out of it, now with the tube it would be totally impossible, with NO doubts.
I'm going to continue with my experiments using the U-tube and the steel rings I had been experimenting with on the lower shaft trying to make it possible to make any cage "Anti pull out".
Thanks again for this thread.

Re: Transition to steel urethral tube Log.
I've been using a steel urethral tube for over a year, on and off. I've had no problems at all with them and prefer a tube to no tube.
It's been noted that the silicone version is not generally preferable for a number of reasons. What are they? I have one and tried it but it wasn't comfortable, maybe I didn't get it long enough to get used to. I was worried about the metal end coming off, but after pulling on it very hard, that isn't a real concern anymore. I like the extra length you get with the silicone tube.
Besides a possible place for bacteria to gather, what are the negatives?
Thank you.

Re: Transition to steel urethral tube Log.
Bacterial infection was my main concern, also that the edge of the tube caused bleeding after a few days.
The tube isn't even cut straight.
The tube is narrow. Impossible to pee through I found.
Also I don't know if it really is body safe. Medical grade tubing.
I have considered getting medical grade tube and making my own, I belive it comes in different diameters.

Re: Transition to steel urethral tube Log.
I agree with all your statements. When I did try the flex tube, I did have a little blood, where I've never had blood with the metal tube. And yes the tube is pretty narrow.
I'd like to find a metal tube that is a bit longer and maybe even larger diameter, though the current one seems to be a good size.
