How porn is changing our sex lives

I made the point in my blog that I just don't get why men in chastity would view porn. The analogy I used was to look at cookbooks whilst hungry- seems daft and masochistic to me (and not in a fun way)!

Because porn isn't simply about wanking, sometimes it's just nice to look at pretty things. Women will spend all day in the shopping mall looking at things that they won't buy.

There's a humongous amount of porn that is SERIOUSLY unpretty, angry and misogynistic. No amount of window shopping can equate to that

Seriously, it's simply because it's interesting to look at. Since I started a Tumblr, I've been looking at sexy pictures a couple of times a day, but it hasn't increased my wank factor, nor have I desired my wife any less. *Most* men realize that it's just pictures.

Yup - I agree that "adult" content assumes that it's audience are exactly that - adult.

It's very sad how desensitised our younger people are becoming. There's enough peer pressure on them as it is without adding to it with false ideas and images.

OFGS, the British Nanny State has gone totally insane, and you're starting to export it to the states. Does anybody remember the flap years ago about how video games were desensitizing our youth to violence? Turns out that the conventional wisdom was wrong -- just like it was wrong about cartoons a few decades earlier, and about comic books a few decades before that.

Up to a point, I'd agree that the legacy of a Labour Government is painful in its intrusion but I'm all for this particular measure. If you want porn, sign up for it rather than it being a default thing. Dead simple. We have the highest teenage pregnancy rates in Europe over here - manifestly open access to porn isn't the same as balanced sex education

Most of the teens I know (boys and girls) have seen porn. Yes, it's a small sample size, but most of them realize that pictures are not real life. Yes there are some idiots, but there have *always* been idiots, er, kids that were just clueless.

I don't agree. By its very ubiquity and universal access, porn has gained an illusion of normality but - as you point out- porn is not real life but how does your average, ignorant spotty youth know that? I think you imbue them with a lot more sense than they actually have. It absolutely breaks my heart when I see kiddy size push up bras and pre teen T shirts emblazoned with the words "Porn star in training". This is NOT right and nor This calm acceptance that porn does no harm allows our kids to be sexualised way , way before they are ready to deal with the emotional consequences - let alone the physical fall out.

Just as the internet allows easier access to porn, it also allows easier access to good information, not to mention the opportunity to ask questions in a safe, private manner. Websites like Scarletteen are invaluable resources that we simply did not have back in the days when we had to ask an older brother to buy those dirty magazines at the store.

Absolutely. But good advice is NOT what is driven to your YouTube vid clip or Google browser.

Of course, our society could simply choose to be so damned schizophrenic about sexuality - that would go a long way toward inducing a healthier attitude in teens.

I agree. Balance is desparately needed rather than assuming that kids have a bullshit /reality filter to protect them.

Porn per se is a personal choice and I deploy the usual caveats of my kink isnt your kink ....etc but it needs to be someting you go and you find because you want it.

Not sure that this will make any sense to you, but it seems to go like this - I get horny, and being horny makes me want to look at erotic images, up to and including porn. Then I hit the end of the cage, and remember no orgasms for me... While I'm not daft, there is a good masochistic streak, so that may explain some of it. Some of my hottest teases have come in conjunction with porn. One time keyhldr had me turn on an especially hot movie, and told me to play with my nipples and not stop. She read a book while I went quite nuts. She likes porn, too, especially those involving really large men. This whole bit about only men liking porn isn't true, though I think women tend to like their porn verbal, men tend to like images.

I'm not sure it is such a bad thing. One of the worst things for us was when you tossed out the Puritans, and they infected our view on sex. I think people in the US tend to be much unhealthier due to the repression than people in many other places, esp. UK and Europe. They're going to get it, always have, always will. Better to explain what it is, that it is no more real than your average action-adventure movie, and just deal with it.

Oh - an anecdote - I used to have to go to the convenience store up the road to buy my copy of Penthouse, and the clerk was a very curvy young woman probably no more than 4-5 years older than I was. I seriously had the hots for her, but knew she wasn't going to jump a 15 year old, so I'd wait until everyone was out of the store, then go up and buy my magazine. She'd usually say something snarky, and I'd always put the magazine face down in case someone walked up - it was a suburban area, and someone could easily know my parents. Not a huge deal, as I used to read my father's Playboys right in front of him, but still. So one day, she turned it back over with a thwack, and announced loudly "FRESH PORN!", and took my money. I couldn't get out of there fast enough.
