I'd like to add my experience as a response to the original poster's question. Is permanent chastity realistic? Probably not for most couples; but it is very good for those who can do it.

We made the decision a little less than a month ago that my chastity is going to be permanent. The effect on our marriage of chastity has been immense. Not only is our sex life better, but our non-sex life is better.

No, I would not say that is what we have. She hates penetration. That is the primary benefit to her of my chastity. Neither of us feel comfortable with oral, and she really hates giving me handjobs.
