How many men in the U.S. are locked up in a chastity device?

Has anyone ever asked all the manufacturers how many they sell a year to figure out how many are in use?

In other words, are we a tiny tiny percentage, or is this somewhat common?

Some years ago I asked, but I didn't get much useful information. This was before we started seeing Chinese knock-offs and a lot of variations on plastic devices.

Several adult toy/equipment distributors have mentioned that chastity devices are actually big sellers, coming (heh) in behind dildoes and vibrators, which are overwhelmingly the most popular. CB-X claimed in an article about 5 years ago that they were sold by over 70 distributors worldwide, and they even moved to a larger warehouse/distribution plant to handle the production. My educated guess is that they passed the 1 million mark, so when you add that to the dozens of other available devices, there's a lottery-winning chance that the guy next to you is wearing a device, or at least owns one.

I think it depends on your definition of mainstream. It's not difficult to find porn featuring chastity devices. If you search the chastity topic, you'll find its been written about in things ranging from the Huffington Post to Cosmopolitan magazine.

The fact that you can buy devices and books on MC on Amazon and Ebay makes the topic reasonably mainstream as far as sexual topics.

I don't think you'll have sitcoms on CBS making common references to devices until dildos also become common in the same way. Frankly, I hope we don't get to that. Some things need to remain in the adult world.

It wouldn't be hard to estimate.

the median household income is 50k. Chastity isn't cheap, so i'll say 50% of men even have the ability to be into chastity.

Over several surveys (you can have a look at the wiki article on BDSM), the percentage of individuals who answer in the stronger categories of kink-affinity hovers between 4-10%. Even though chastity isn't necessarily kink, i think there's a strong enough association that using kink-related prevalence numbers works okay.

The vast majority of kink is encompassed with light bedroom bondage and impact play. But the strong respondents above (say, 7%) would be those that are into more than that, in all likelihood. However, even among those, it's probably a decent estimate to put chastity at 10-20% or so.

So, 119 million,
of which half are too poor to really be into chastity (down to 60 million)
7% of which are into kink or strongly identify as such (4.2 million)
of which perhaps 10-20% are into chastity, and lets just say ALL of those individuals are currently locked: 420,000 - 840,000 men over 15 might be locked in the US.

These people would probably be heavily non-normally distributed, but it would be tough to say how.

As of Jan 1 2014, estimates based on the 2010 census project 295 cities over 100,000 people in the US. These account for 90 million people, or, 28% of the US population.

118,000 - 236,000 men over 15 may be locked up in those big cities.

Per city, that would be about 400-800 people in each city. Another way of looking at it is that 236,000 men out of 120 million may be locked, which makes it 196 men per hundred thousand.

Or, 196 in Woodbridge, New Jersey (last on the list of 295), and 16,464 in New York.

You can play with the numbers, and assume non-normal distributions, but, as long as you aren't part of any kink-related gatherings or similar disturbances of random distribution, or, you don't self-assort, chances are you've never met anyone who is locked.

Even if you doubled many of the later estimates (people into kink, people into chastity, etc), you're still under 2000 men in cities of more than 100,000 people. Especially since the number of people you probably know in a city is actually very very small... you almost certainly don't know anyone locked in chastity.

I saw the Huffpo articles, not the Cosmo, but the Huffpo articles seem to mock the lifestyle and the devices. If I were a better writer I'd submit an article that accurately describes the lifestyle and the benefits.

You aren't watching the right sitcoms. Numerous sitcoms are/have been making references to them. A few I can think of right off the top would be 'Two and a Half Men', 'Big Bang Theory', 'Hot in Cleveland' and 'Two Broke Girls'. (That last one is chock-a-block full of raunchy sexual innuendo.)
