Doesn't make sense but it seems to be consistent with almost everything I have read and experienced.
One part of it is that the penis isn't what usually hurts. It is the pulling on the balls that hurts. Minimize that and you minimize the pain. One more thing, if the pain is a burning sensation on the scrotum around the ring then it is likely that the gap is too small. Be aware of what is hurting, there are various "hurts" that are all affected by different things. Further complicating things is that changing one can impact another.
Good luck with the Jail Bird. If you don't mind sharing how will it compare size wise to the CB6000?

It's funny, I loved the look of my CB-3000 when I got it. The only other thing I had seen was the bird locked and I thought the CB looked better. My wife hated it and didn't even want to see it (although she was fine having me locked up). I was about to get a CB-6000S because I wanted something smaller and that is when I saw a post on the old forum about the Mature Metal Pet Trap (thank you ChineseBob). I fell in lust with it and ultimately settled on the jailbird instead. My wife doesn't exactly like it but isn't turned off by it either. I take that as a complete endorsement, wife approved
Another technique to relieve the "stretching the balls making them burn" effect is to wear a snug fitting jock strap or tight underwear to bed. When you have the nocturnal erection, the jock strap gives support and doesn't allow much room to pull the ring away from the body.
I feel there is a limit as to how small you can go with your device, but I agree, the less room to "get a run on things" the less it hurts.
As an example: my maximum pain comes from wearing a cb3000 without anything else while playing in bed with Lisa. My minimum pain comes from wearing my cb6000s with a snug pair of underwear over the top.
