Hmm. This happened a few months ago when I deleted a rather large bunch of spam members. Atone spotted it, but I can't remember what happened.

*Edit*: All fixed now.

A couple of weeks ago the board was so slow I might have believed that 'Total members' was a negative number but it has been pretty lively lately.

I suspect that the number of members is calculated as an increment from a previous number. Something like: "Here's the stored number of members as of XX/XX/XXXX. Since then we've added / deleted YYY members. Therefore the new number of members is ZZZZ."

In that case, if you ever add or delete a large number of accounts from a previous number, then the new calculated value could change radically, either positive (if new accounts are added) or negatively (if accounts are deleted).

The number will usually settle out after a database refresh.

Here's something interesting. We've cleared out the spammer registrations, and at the moment there are 1,225 registered members. Of those, 51 are "bots", that is, web crawling scripts that process information to allow web searches to lead back here. That leaves 1,174 as actual humans, of which 655 have made only 3 or fewer posts. That means only 44% (520 people) of the "Total Members" are considered to be active.

Of the 520, 89 are Keyholders, or 17%. However, some of those 89 (I don't have a count) also fall into the 655 that have only made a couple of posts. This makes it more likely that only 8% of our "active regulars" are Keyholders.
