Ah crap, broke cage

Post by sirmebane »

I knew I could break it when I started but I thought I'd have more warning.

The plan seemed sound. The cage had too much play and I needed to drop the post just a few degrees to reduce the gap. I used some cloth to keep the vice from scarring the ring and gently tapped the post with a hammer.

Life teaches you lessons.

It wasn't moving until finally it did, it now had an absurd angle that had to be corrected back the other way. Gentle tap. Uh, oh. Crack in the weld. Gentle tap. <ding> <ding> <ding> <ding>

The post broke off and hit the ground and bounced. Ugh.

I ordered a new device yesterday but that was an experiment in ring size and may be too small. Short of buying a welder or taking an embarrassing trip to a welding shop or buying yet another cage, do I have any conceivable repair options?

Mark at MCN might be able to fix and weld at the proper angle.

For a $20 Chinese cage, I doubt it would be worth his effort. I was looking for a 'weld in a can' solution which I'm sure doesn't' exist but you never know until you ask.

I'll keep him in mind for other projects though, thanks for the idea.

JB Weld. Ugly, but often can be made to work. It's a two part epoxy putty that hardens like steel.

I'm not sure if it will work for your particular application, but check it out.

I doubt that the epoxy type of weld can repair a post. It can take some side pressure, but it would be too brittle to survive for long.

That epoxy weld won't fix a broken post on this. And unless you have a buddy who can weld it for free, it might be cheaper to order a new cage - or to see if you can order a new ring. I'm pretty sure I've seen them listed.
