I'm going to take it off and measure. I wore the sizing ring for two days and was constantly checking it. I could be wrong but this totally doesn't feel the same.

Ring without the whole thing is a really different deal. Might be the ring is just fine, but you need to reduce the gap, which is something you can't guess at very well without something prior. From the pic, it looks like the rest of it fits.

I got the 3/8" gap thinking that would be too small considering I'm high and tight. I think the gap is fine and just the ring is too big.

Sleeping was no problem. I can even lay on my stomach if I position my legs right.

I saw that when I went back to take a look at it. I thought the gap looked good from what I recall though.

I can get two fingers inside the base ring on mine when flaccid but during a nocturnal erection I can just barely get the end of my pinky in there. It would be a challenge to pull out though but that is because the cage is much snugger on me than it appeared to be for you. I think I would like to try sometime but honestly just cannot be bothered with putting everything back on.

Maybe a pubic piercing of some sort could be made to work? I don't know much about them (comfort, durability etc...) but it looks like it would be the right place to fabricate something to prevent pullout. It would have to have some range of motion though because I suspect it could be stressed during an attempted erection.
