Backscatter scanners

Post by thumper »

I blogged today that Belle was going to make me travel wearing the CB-6000 because it was airport friendly, but now I find that MSP (my local skyport) has installed backscatter scanners (the kind that see though your clothes).

So. Anyone have experience in that department? Thoughts? Am I screwed?

Are you traveling alone? What is your threshold for embarrassment?

I forget where, but I read in someone's blog recently that they wore a CB-xxxx into one of those scanners. I was actually surprised they stopped him, but they did. He had to go into a secure area and show it to security. I had assumed that the imaging would be clear enough that security would know it's no handgun in there! lol

Honestly, with the number of CBs being sold, I would expect the security guys will start seeing them enough that they'll just buzz people through.

If I was honestly wearing 24/7 for my wife, I don't know if I'd have the guts to go through it or not.

I read your blog earlier and saw that entry on the backscatter scanner....they have them at my airport too! I have been through these things twice now (once international, once domestic), they see everything. You cannot even wear a belt or have anything in your pockets. Say good by to wearing your MCD through the airport. I do have something to recommend, however, that might solve that age old problem of holding the key. There is a company that manufactures a Cyber Lock. I don't know if they sell small padlocks or not, but you may want to Google them; here's the link: http://www.videx.com. The key and lock act more like a USB stick and allow the key to be set to a timed interval so that it only opens the lock when instructed. Check it out....this may be a whole new era for key holders....

I could see a hardware+software set up that would allow a Belle to remotely lock/unlock the device. Something like a "smart" padlock + USB cable + iPhone would do the trick. Even more flexible would be a USB activated key safe. If the device was smart enough you could come up with all sorts of protocols that would make the device secure even against the (honest) programmer who created the software. Dreamlover Labs should start working on this as soon as they finish their current vaporware product.

I was reading your blog and it seems that we are having similar issues with the A ring. Did you find any solutions and I wonder if you have done and fine "tuning" with sand paper or?! I had to put off my test fitting due to some pretty serious raw spots. *Being high and tight is a bitch!

As to backscatter scanners. I would think that anything out of the ordinary in the private parts area will get a added look so... Unless your willing to whip it out... I would put it away for the airplane trips or take the bus / drive.

In this case the integrated lock of the steelheart is a disadvantage. You can do this with the CB6k though and anything that uses a standard lock.

Go buy a bunch of the little master locks. Make sure they are all keyed differently. Number the locks and the keys. I use a steel lettering stamp but a sharpie would probably work. Unlock the locks and then seal the keys in small coin envelopes. Have Bell sign across the seal and number the envelope to correspond to the lock it goes with. Wear the CB to the airport. Right before security go in the bathroom, confirm the key is sealed via photo to Belle, then open it and the lock. Once on the other side go in the bathroom, put the CB back on using the next numbered lock. Confirm to Belle via picture the lock is on making sure to show the lock number that is in use. Repeat as necessary through the trip. You will need a bunch of locks but they are pretty cheap, about $3 on amazon. The CB will have to go through the check point in your carry on but I doubt that would be a problem especially if you are alone. You might get a question but I think that is unlikely.

Good luck and happy travels.

Good Lord, A, that's a nice complicated solution. I mean, I can see how it would work but still...

Thumper, are you truly so undisciplined that you can't be unlocked for the duration of a plane ride and then when you get to your destination and lock yourself back up, you can't be trusted, knowing that the key is in your possession? If that's the case, then I think the best solution is to:

1) Hire a overnight babysitter/nanny to take care of the kids for four days;
2) Have Belle arrange to take four days off from work;
3) Buy Belle a plane ticket to travel with you;
4) Give Belle a $2000 budget to have fun shopping or going to the spa or whatever while you are doing business during your business trip;
5) Plan another $500- $1000 for very delicious dinners during the time that you are together in the evening on your business trip.

Clearly, your horny brain is not getting the message that you are supposed to be chaste. Maybe coming at it a different way---through your wallet---will drive the message home that locked means locked, even if you are on the honor system of being locked.

Just a thought. ;)
